COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- After falling behind 2-0 in the first 10 minutes, the U.S. Air Force Academy rallied for five straight goals and held on for a 5-4 win over visiting Ï㽶ÊÓƵ in a men's exhibition college hockey game at the Cadet Ice Arena, Monday.

It capped a "close but no cigar" weekend for the Redmen, who kicked off their three-game trip to Colorado with a 2-2 tie against the University of Denver on Saturday, followed by a 4-3 loss at Colorado College, Sunday.

McGill struck first with two goals in a span of 26 seconds, both coming from defencemen.

Nicolas Therrien, a freshman from Chateauguay, Que., scored with a slapshot from the left circle at the 9:06 mark from Ben Morse and Andrew Wright.

The Redmen took a 2-0 lead at 9:32 on another slapper, from the left circle by defenceman Keven Dupont. His marker was assisted by Christophe Longpre-Poirier and Vincent Bourgeois.

After that goal, USAF starting goaltender Jason Torf was turfed and replaced by senior Stephen Caple. The Falsons answered with four goals in a span of four minutes and 15 seconds to take a 4-2 lead.

Jason Fabian got the Falcons on the board at 15:09 on an odd-man rush. John Kruse made a cross-ice pass to Fabian coming down the right side and fired the puck past McGill sophomore Antoine Tardif. Less than a minute later, Kyle DeLaurell tied the game at 16:06. Tim Kirby took a shot from the right point that bounced around in front of net to DeLaurell.

Thirty seconds later, Kruse gave the Falcons a 3-2 lead with a wrister from the left circle.

After serving a tripping penalty, George Michalke came out of the penalty box and forced a turnover to teammate Chad Demers, who tipped the puck back to Michalke. He went the length of the ice, around a defender in front and flipped a backhand over the shoulder of Tardif.

McGill changed goalies to start the second period, replacing Tardif with senior Hubert Morin.

Air Force extended its lead to 5-2 when senior Paul Weisgarber tallied at 6:30 of the middle frame, beating Morin from right in front of the crease.

Unstirred, McGill stormed stormed back to cut the Falcon lead to 5-4.

Centre Alexandre Picard-Hooper of Boucherville, Que, took a pass in front from linemate Francis Verreault-Paul and scored at 11:40. Fourteen seconds later, the Redmen struck again as Montrealer Nicolas Biniek connected on a rebound to chase Air Force's starting netminder, who gave way to Torf.

Air Force outshot McGill 43-21 and was 2-for-7 on the power play, while the Redmen went 0-for-3 with the man-advantage. Torf made nine saves in 38 minutes and allowed two goals. Caple was credited with the win despite making only eight saves in 22 minutes of work.

Tardif allowed four goals on 13 shots in his 20 minutes but Morin was saddled with the loss as he conced the game-winning goal. He made 29 saves.

Air Force opens the regular-season on the road against third-ranked North Dakota on Oct. 7.

McGill went 0-4-1 in preseason play, losing all four games by one goal. The Redmen open defence of their Queen's Cup league championship at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Oct. 7-8.
