AHL clash of titans could feature McGill grads

Published: 17 November 2008

MONTREAL -- Two former captains of the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ men's hockey team could make history  Wednesday, when the Portland Pirates travel to Hartford for a game against the Wolf Pack.

Should Mathieu Darche and David Urquhart both dress for their respective American Hockey League teams, it will mark the first time that two grads from McGill will cross paths in an AHL game. Both earned commerce degrees from the University.

Darche, a native of St. Laurent, Que., who turns 32 on Nov. 26 and played left wing for the Redmen from 1996 to 2000, is red hot and has scored six points -- including five goals -- in his last three games with Portland, the top farm team of the Buffalo Sabres.

Urquhart of Thorold, Ont., who patrolled the McGill blueline from 2004 to 2008, has one goal and an assist in three AHL contests with Hartford, the top affiliate of the New York Rangers.

Urquhart, a 24-year-old rookie, scored on his first shift in the AHL on Nov. 3, sparking Hartford to a 3-1 victory over Albany.

McGill has produced 44 players for the pro hockey ranks over the last 25 years, including five who have skated in the AHL and one (Darche) in the NHL.
