2012 HALL OF FAME PROFILE: Mark Joncas

MONTREAL - Football player Mark Joncas is among five new additions announced recently for induction to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame.

Born on July 5, 1958 in Val d'Or, Que., Mark Richard Joncas went on to play CEGEP football with the Trois-Rivières Diablos, then studied engineering at McGill, graduating with a B.Eng. in 1982. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound defensive tackle became a starter in his third season and over his next two seasons, established himself as one of the premiere linemen in the country. When the dust settled on a brilliant collegiate career, he was in on 140 total tackles, including 11 quarterback sacks.

In 1980, his break-out year, Joncas was voted his first of back-to-back Team MVP awards, earning conference all-star status and CIAU All-Canadian honours. In his senior campaign, he served as co-captain and guided the Redmen to a 7-0 first-place finish in regular-season play, repeating as a league all-star and an All-Canadian. He was voted as the conference's most outstanding down lineman, receiving the league nomination for the J.P. Metras trophy, and captured the Alouettes Alumni Trophy as the most outstanding player in Quebec university football. He was drafted 49th overall by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1982.

Other 2012 inductees to the McGill pantheon include swimmer Carol Chiang (BSc '99) of The Pas, Man., soccer goalkeeper Aldo Braccio (BA '85, MA '87) of Montreal, the 1962 Redmen football team and the late Frank McGill (BCom '15), a swimmer, hockey and football star from Montreal.

The induction luncheon, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, kicks off the University's Homecoming Week celebrations. Tickets for the event are $65 and can be reserved by contacting the McGill Alumni Association at 514-398-8288.
