ERZURUM, Turkey (CIS) - McGill star Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., registered a pair of assists as Canada blanked host Turkey 11-0 on Wednesday night to finish first in the round-robin portion of the Winter Universiade women's hockey tournament and earn a semifinal date with the United States.

Bettez, a management senior, is third on the Canadian squad in scoring with seven points, including four goals, in five games.

Defending champion Canada, which claimed gold in 2009 when the sport made its World University Games debut in Harbin, China, finished the five-game preliminary round with four wins in regulation and one shootout victory for 14 points, one better than second-place Finland (4-0-1). Slovakia (3-2) took third place, the Americans (2-3) were fourth, while both Great Britain (1-4) and Turkey (0-5) were left out of the medal round.

Friday's semifinals will see Finland battle Slovakia at 4 p.m. local time and Canada take on the USA at 8 p.m. local (1 p.m. ET). The championship final is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. local (6 a.m. ET). The CIS all-stars beat the United States 9-0 on Monday.

As expected, the Canadians dominated from start to finish against a local team that had been outscored 77-0 in its first four contests. Team Canada head coach Les Lawton was proud of the way his players handled the situation.

听

"I was happy with the way the girls sort of sat back and made things good for the Turkish team. They (Turkey) have a long way to go in their game, but I think we allowed them to have some fun tonight," said the Concordia University bench boss. "That was important for us going into the game. Not just to salute the Turkish team but also the fans, who have been really good to us. I'm really proud of our team."

"As Canadian hockey players we realize we're very fortunate and grateful to play this game, and have the opportunity to travel while we play. Anything that we can do to help grow the game is beneficial for everyone involved," added team captain Andrea Ironside of Wilfrid Laurier. "I really believe tonight was a memorable experience for all Canadian and Turkish players, and I'm glad I got to be a part of it."

Styles, a Wilfrid Laurier forward from Orangeville, Ont., who had scored four times versus Great Britain on Sunday, also tallied an assist against the Turks for her second four-point outing of the tourney.

Saskatchewan's Breanne George of Saskatoon and Western Ontario's Ellie Seedhouse of Whitby, Ont., both found the back of the net twice, while four players added singles including Ironside of Collingwood, Ont., Guelph rearguard Jacalyn Sollis of West Vancouver, Dalhousie's Jocelyn Leblanc of Moncton, and Montreal's Kim Desch锚nes of Saint-Quentin, N.B.

Sollis opened the scoring only 29 seconds into the affair, Styles doubled the lead at the 1:40 mark, and Canada was up by 4-0 after 9:36 of play. The score was still 4-0 after one period and the scoreboard read 8-0 after 40 minutes.

Clause, a Brock netminder from Hamilton, was only tested six times the entire match as the Canadians outshot their rivals 61-6 including 18-1 in the first, 22-3 in the second and 21-2 in the third.

Berfu Merve Bolulu made 50 saves in the Turkish net.

Overall, Canada outscored its opponents 39-1 and outshot them 218 to 35 in five round-robin matches.

George led Canada in scoring in the preliminary round with seven goals and four assists for 11 points. Styles also finished with seven markers and added three helpers for 10 points.
