20 McGillians headed to Beijing Olympics
MONTREAL -- A 20-member entourage, including 11 athletes, with
ties to Ï㽶ÊÓƵ are among the 331 competitors named to
the Canadian Olympic team for the 2008 Beijing Games (Aug. 8-24) on
Wednesday.
Nine McGill graduates will serve in an administrative capacity at
the Games for either the Canadian Olympic Committee or the
IOC.
Among the current McGill students headed for China is Marie-Pierre
Gagné, a synchronized swimmer from Ahuntsic, Que., wrestler David
Zilberman of Cote St. Luc, Que., canoeist Thomas Hall of Pointe
Claire, Que., and Victoria Poon, a kinesiology student from
LaSalle, Que., who swam for the McGill Martlets in 2006-07.
Graduates include soccer forward Amber Allen of Pitt Meadows, B.C.
and rower Douglas Vandor from Dewittville, Que., both of whom
starred on the playing field for McGill.
Other grads are weightlifter Jeane Lassen of Whitehorse (Yukon),
wrestler Martine Dugrenier of Laval, Que., kayaker Andrew Willows,
a native of Gananoque, Ont., who resides in Lachine and trains at
Pointe Claire, and three-time Olympic judoka Keith Morgan, a
Montreal resident originally from Calgary.
The other athlete is soccer star Amy Walsh of St. Hilaire, Que.,
who played for the Martlets in 1996 and transferred to Nebraska the
next year on an athletic scholarship.
Among the McGill grads heading to Beijing in an administrative role
are Richard Pound (IOC member), Howard Stupp (IOC staff) of
Chomedy, Que., Victor Zilberman (COC wrestling coach) of Cote St.
Luc, Tom Johnson (COC swim coach) of Montreal, Michael Creamer of
Montreal (COC canoe/kayak coach) and Montreal native Derek
Covington (COC staff), plus Dr. Connie Lebrun (COC physician) of
Edmonton, Diana Perez (COC physiotherapist) of Beaconsfield, Que.,
and Alain Delorme (COC physiologist) of St. Jean, Que.
Over the past century, 106 McGill students have gone on to Olympic
glory and they have won a combined total of 24 Olympic medals,
including five gold, eight silver and 11 bronze.
Topping the list is Dr. Phil Edwards. A graduate from the faculty
of medicine, Edwards won a whopping five bronze medals while
representing Canada at the 1928 Amsterdam Games, the 1932 Los
Angeles Games and the 1936 Berlin Games.Â
He was the only Canadian Olympian to win medals in three Olympic
Games until short-track speed-skater Marc Gagnon equalled the feat
in 2002. His Canadian record of five Olympic medals stood for 66
years before it was finally matched by Gagnon.
Only three McGill students have won Olympic gold -- swimmer George
Hodgson (two golds at the 1912 Stockholm Games), Kim St-Pierre
(gold at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City and in 2006 at Turin) and
freestyle skier Jennifer Heil, also at the 2006 Games.

and present student athletes at McGill who have participated in
winter and summer Olympic Games.
