14th Annual McGill-Queen's Challenge Boat Race showdown set for Sunday
Ìý
MONTREAL -- The 14th annual McGill-Queen's Challenge Boat Race is scheduled for Sunday (May 2) on the Lachine Canal. This unique regatta is the Canadian equivalent of England's annual Oxford-Cambridge and the annual Harvard-Yale race in the U.S. The Queen's Gaels lead the all-time series 7-6 between the long-time foes since the head-to-head competition was first introduced in 1997.
Ìý
The 2010 event begins with men's and women's novice crews at 11 a.m., followed by the varsity heavyweight eights at 12:30 p.m. The launching spot will be at the LaSalle-Coke Footbridge and the race will be held on the Lachine Canal, between St. Joseph Boulevard and St. Parick Street.
Ìý
Each crew will compete in a 2.8-kilometre head race, followed by a 500m sprint. Two points are awarded for a 2.8k win and one point for a 500m victory. Three trophies will be up for grabs (men, women, overall) and the points accumulated from each race will decide the overall winning university, which will claim the Lorne Gales Challenge Cup.
Ìý
The long-time rivals traditionally bet crew shirts on the sprint, with the winner receiving the shirt off the back of his opponent.Ìý A trophy presentation and barbecue is scheduled after the event is concluded.

Last year, a last-second victory by the McGill women’s novice four boat proved to be the difference as McGill captured the Lorne Gales Challenge Cup on the Cataraqui River in Kingston, Ont. McGill also claimed the Women’s Challenge trophy, winning all five races, including the 500 and 6000-metre heavyweight eight competitions in addition to all three 500m sprints by the novice boat. On the men’s side, the Golden Gaels claimed the Challenge Blade trophy winning four of five races. One point was awarded for each victory and McGill came away with six of the 10 races on the day for a Gales Challenge Cup victory that snapped a five-year losing streak to Queen’s.

The McGill-Queen's Challenge adds another dimension to the long-standing athletic rivalry that has existed between these two schools since 1884 when the first football confrontation began.
Ìý
The inaugural Challenge Boat Race, held in 1997 at the Olympic rowing basin in Montreal, was comprised of a 2000m head race and a 500m dash. That year, McGill claimed the Gales Cup.
Ìý
In 1998, the Challenge Blade trophy was unveiled, intended as a competition between the top men's crew at each institution. In 1999, the Women's Challenge trophy was added for bragging rights on the female side. In 2001, an alumni race was introduced as an exhibition showcase.
Ìý
As the McGill-Queen's Challenge Boat Race has evolved over the past decade, so has its format. The long-standing rivals alternate hosting the event from year to year, and the traditional format is usually a 5km or 6km headrace, depending upon course conditions, followed by a 500m sprint.
