The story of a homecoming: Montrealer Max Stern, bibliophile and gallery owner

Wednesday, October 22, 2003toFriday, October 31, 2003
McLennan Library Building 3459 rue McTavish, Montreal, QC, H3A 0C9, CA
Max Stern was an art collector/dealer who emigrated from Europe to Montreal, where his home was directly above his place of work, the renowned Dominion Gallery. Stern introduced his new country to the art of his homeland and at the same time drew attention to remarkable Canadian artists who might otherwise have been ignored. On his death, he bequeathed his personal collection of books, an art library, to McGill's Rare Books Division. This exhibit will give the public a fascinating glimpse of his interests, tastes and requirements, helping us to understand the man himself and his influence.
