The Good Person of Sichuan
The Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Department of English Drama & Theatre Program’s Theatre Lab is proud to present Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Person of Sichuan, translated by Michael Hofmann playing at Moyse Hall Theatre from April 1-3 and 8-10, 2010 all shows at 7:30pm.

Please join us for Bertolt Brecht’s classic parable of economy and social morality wherein a young prostitute, Shen Te, struggles to be good, but finds her kindness taken advantage of by neighbours and so-called friends. To protect her interests, both moral and material, she must create a stern and cold male alter-ego, a cousin named Shui Ta. Finished in 1943 while Brecht was in exile in California, The Good Person of Sichuan examines the connections between economy, social morality, altruism, and capitalism

The Theatre Lab is a year-long intensive course focusing on in-depth analysis and investigation of dramatic texts and playwrights.Ìý The students, in conjunction with Prof. Myrna Wyatt Selkirk, worked as an ensemble with everyone contributing toward the final vision. Through independent research and intensive group work this production focuses on the core question: in a worldÌýwhere corruption is rife and the only way to survive is to lie, cheatÌýand deceive, can a person afford to have principles?Ìý In the end, the answer is that there is no definitive answer – it is left to the audience to decide.

The Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Department of English Drama & Theatre Program is dedicated to providing students with practical theatrical experience. Costume Design by the Costuming Class and Catherine Bradley (Resident Costume Designer); Set Design by Jordana Globerman, Lighting Design by Manuel Roman, and Sound Design by Tessa Vikander under the tutelage of Keith Roche (Little Miracle Productions, Segal Centre for Performing Arts, Just for Laughs). ÌýMusic composed by Danji Buck-Moore and the Theatre Lab Class.
