BIORESOURCE ENGINEERING SENIOR SEMINAR

Thursday, April 7, 2011 10:00to11:30
Raymond Building 21111 Lakeshore Road, St Anne de Bellevue, QC, H9X 3V9, CA

Item 1: Ehsan Khodopanahi
An Overview of Nanotechnology

The word nanotechnology refers to an emerging field in both science and technology that develops materials on the nanometer scale. Nano-science mainly draws on the principles of nano-physics, but since it deals with atoms and molecules, it is considered a highly interdisciplinary area.

...Ehsan Khodopanahi completed his undergraduate degree in Agricultural Engineering (crop science and plant breeding) in Iran and his MSc in Plant Genetics in the Ukraine. He is currently in the second year of his Master’s in the Bioresource Engineering Department.

Item 2: Shiva Ladan
Bioremediation with Kale

Heavy metal pollution in soil is a significant environmental problem due to their negative effects on human health and agriculture. For example, arsenic (As) is highly toxic and is carcinogenic. Thus, its remediation from contaminated soils is necessary. A pot-culture greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of two inoculants of fluorescent pseudomonades bacteria to measure their influence on remediation.

Shiva Ladan is currently working on her PhD in Bioresource Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Prasher.

Item 3: Mohammed Bakari
Pyrolysis of Biomass

Biomass is increasingly becoming an attractive source of energy because of its renewability, abundance and sustainability. Pyrolysis is a thermochemical process that reduces biomass to gaseous, liquid and solid alternative fuels. The objective of this presentation is to discuss the effect of temperature and holding time on the pyrolysis process.

Mohammed is currently working on his PhD in Bioresource Engineering under the supervision of Professor Ngadi.

Item 4: Shoieb Akaram
Chennai – Unity in Diversity

Why should visiting Chennai be a part of your bucket list? This seminar will deal with the various aspects of this wonderful city.

Shoieb Akaram was born in India where he obtained his Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology from SASTRA University. He is currently pursuing an MSc in Bioresource Engineering.
