Summer scholarship student research a cut above

Fifteen of the Faculty's brightest students, all holding either NSERC or CIHR Summer Scholarships, or Alumni Donor-supported awards, competed in the 10th Annual USRA poster presentation which featuring projects they undertook over the summer.Ìý Says Philippe Seguin, Acting Associate Dean (Research), "It is incredible to see the research skills that these students have developed and the progress they have made in such a short time."

Food Science student Zhi Xin Wang (Supervisor: Benjamin K. Simpson) was awarded first prize for her project to create biodegradable plastic films from chitin extracted from lobster waste.Ìý

Second place went to Jessica Miville (Supervisor: Valerie Orsat) who formulated a new food product - a healthy and tasty pulse-based ice-cream.

Student Kristen Lee's (Supervisor: Olivia Wilkins) project "Cloning Heat Shock Factors in Oryza Sativa (Asian Rice) placed third.

Francesca Montanaro (Supervisor: Hope Weiler), School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, shared a sentiment expressed by many of the students, "I went into this to help figure out if I would be interested in pursuing a research career - and that is now an option I will consider."
