Speaker/Bio:
Dr. Kirsten Johnson MD, MPH, is a Health Advisor for the Canadian Red Cross’ Health in Emergencies Program. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Ď㽶ĘÓƵ and has spent the past fifteen years practicing Emergency Medicine at the Ď㽶ĘÓƵ Health Centre hospitals in Montreal, Canada. She also works as a physician in the Cree and Inuit communities of Nunavik. She is President of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians and CEO of Humanitarian U, a social enterprise that has trained over 33,000 professionals at the WHO, UN partner agencies, Emergency Medical Teams, academic institutions and humanitarian organizations.
Dr. Johnson has worked in emergency and disaster medicine, disaster risk reduction, humanitarian response, coordination and health sector capacity building throughout the world. Her research has focused on genocide, child combatants, sexual gender-based violence and conflict-related health, mental health and psychosocial support. She has worked extensively on the development of technical guidance and toolkits, briefings, publications, and book chapters across the emergency management cycle in fragile, conflict-affected and vulnerable settings including Humanitarian U’s Assessment of the Impact of eLearning on Humanitarian Aid work (2019), UNFPA’s State of the World Population Report (2015), Global Humanitarian Medicine and Disaster Relief in Auerbach’s Wilderness Medicine (2015) and Médecins Sans Frontiers book on Professionalizing Humanitarian Action (2012). She is involved in humanitarian professionalization, working on the development of competencies and standards for the training, education and certification of humanitarian responders globally.

Yinan Yu is a first year master student in Transcultural Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at Ď㽶ĘÓƵ under the supervision of Dr. MĂłnica Ruiz-Casares. Her current research focus on inadequate child supervision in low- and middle-income countries. Her research interests are cultural perspectives of mental health and mental health concerns in immigrant populations.

Wondering what to do with your BA in Environmental Studies & Development? Come hear what Jelena Lalic has to say about working in the private sector & the municipal government and how her athletics helped her in her work!
Jelena finished her BA in Environment and Development at the McGill's School of Environment and her Masters in Geography, Public Policy and Public Administration at Concordia University. She has been working for three years in the private sector at ERA Environmental and eight years of experience working for the City of Montreal in environment. Throughout her career at the city, she put in place the ISO 14001 environmental management system for the borough of Saint-Laurent which won at the Montreal Sustainability Gala in 2015 as the first public institution in Québec putting in place such a project. She also has experience in various projects related to the environment such as leading green alley projects, implementing organic waste, managing community gardens, working in partnership with local NGOs among other things. She also has 15 years of experience in coaching track and field at the provincial and national levels, working for the Saint-Laurent Sélect track and field club, that helped her throughout her career in environment.
Raynald Macher-Poitras obtained his B. Eng. at Ď㽶ĘÓƵ and then his M.Sc. in environmental science at UQAM. After more than 10 years working in sustainable urban redevelopment at Ville de MontrĂ©al, he is now head of the ecological transition section at Le Sud-Ouest where he manages a team of professionals working on climate change adaptation projects, urban agriculture and sustainable transportation.

 Janna Boloten is a registered dietitian with 10 years of work experience across healthcare and business settings. Since 2017, Janna has worked at Abbott, on the Nutrition Science team, where she collaborates with other departments, including Research & Development and Marketing, as well as external healthcare professionals, to translate the most relevant nutrition research and guidelines into practical actions for care providers and people. In her role, she specializes in diabetes and healthy aging.Â
Prior to joining Abbott, Janna spent 3 years in private practice and as a clinical dietitian at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. She also worked for 3 years as a medical nutrition sales representative for Nestle Health Science, where she gained sales, marketing and business development skills. Janna is now pursuing a Masters' in Health Management, and has a B.Sc. in Dietetics and Human Nutrition and a B.A in Psychology from Ď㽶ĘÓƵ in Montreal.Â

Jane was born and raised in Montreal, Canada, but loves to travel the coasts of any continent. She clearly appreciates her Alma mater, Ď㽶ĘÓƵ, having completed her BSc, PhD and a Postdoctoral Fellowship here. Jane’s first love is for science and medicine but regulatory and policy work have always kept her fascinated as well. That’s why she chose a career with the Government of Canada. Jane is a Senior Biologist and Scientific Evaluator at Health Canada, where she works with a team of Chemists and Biologists to protect human health and the environment under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. In this role, Jane also works with other agencies, such as the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a part of the United Nations’ World Health Organization (the WHO). There she helps to evaluate candidate agents of human carcinogenesis.

Dr. Prosanta Chakrabarty is a Full Professor and the Curator of Fishes at the Museum of Natural Science and Department of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University. He is also a Research Associate at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C and the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Canada. He is a systematist and an ichthyologist studying the evolution and biogeography of fishes, his work has taken him to more than thirty countries around the world (including Japan, Australia, Brazil, Taiwan, Madagascar, Panama, and Kuwait). He has described over a dozen new species and published more than 85 peer-reviewed papers and several books.
Dr. Prosanta grew up in New York City, his undergraduate degree is from Ď㽶ĘÓƵ in Montreal (the city where he was born) and his PhD is from the University of Michigan. He is a former Program Director at the National Science Foundation, an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a TED Senior Fellow. and a Fulbright Distinguished Chair.

Nicolette grew up in Southern Alberta, riding horses in the Rocky Mountains. She always had a love for nature, the environment and learning about different ecosystems and their flora and fauna. She graduated from Lethbridge Community College with a diploma in Renewable Resource Management and decided to live and learn near the ocean. She moved to Vancouver Island and went to the University of Victoria, graduating with a co-op degree in Biology. She spent time studying at Bamfield Marine Sciences Center, and completed 4 co-op jobs while trying to decide what to do for a career. Her final co-op work term in 2008 was with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada working in Salmon Stock Assessment in the Strait of Georgia. Ever since then, Nicolette made a career out of this final co-op opportunity and enjoys working with Salmon where she enumerates stocks, collects biological samples and monitors recreational marine catch.

Allison Lapierre, Environmental Specialist, Health Canada
Allison works at Health Canada as an Environmental Specialist for Canada’s Chemicals Management Plan. Since joining the government she also worked at Environment and Climate Change Canada in the Industrial Chemicals and Waste Division in regulatory management. She has a BSc in Ecology and an MENV in Environmental Assessment, both from Concordia University. As a student Allison participated in the data collection for the Urban Transit Exposure study lead by Health Canada, and worked at the municipality of Mont-Tremblant on the Shoreline inspection program. Allison’s first career job was at a small company specializing in software development for environmental compliance, where she learned about the industry perspective of complying with environmental and health and safety regulations. Allison plans to continue working within the federal government, and will likely continue to seek out new opportunities within and outside of Health Canada. At the beginning of the pandemic she temporarily joined the Health Products and Food Branch at Heath Canada to support the licensing and recalls of hand sanitizers and disinfectants.
