This special Lunch&Learn session welcomesÌý²¹²Ô»åÌýÌýfor a discussion of their book co-authored with ,Ìý. Drawing from the iconic longitudinal Berkeley Guidance Study,ÌýLiving on the EdgeÌýexamines the rapid social changes and uncertainty that defined 20th-century American life, and how the hopes, struggles, and daily lives of the 1900s relate to the experiences of our current generation. The upcoming session will use these main themes ofÌýLiving on the EdgeÌýas a springboard for larger conversations about aging and life course theories, questions, and data to highlight the relevance of looking back in order to look forward to a brighter future.ÌýÌý

The missionÌýof the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy is to initiate research, educate students, and provide outreach activities that address the opportunities and challenges of an aging population. Faculty and students at the Pepper Institute examine a wide array of issues related to the social aspects of aging and their implications for public policy, including pathways to later life, aging and health disparities, communities and transportation, and aging and health policy.Ìý

The Consortium on Analytics for Data-Driven Decision-Making (CAnD3) is a partnership comprised of pan-Canadian, international, multidisciplinary, and cross-sectoral partners and team members.ÌýCAnD3 adopts an integrated, interdisciplinary approachÌýto co-construct, co-fund, and co-implement an innovative training program to tackle population aging using powerful analytics. Our Fellows and partners are trained in evidence-informed decision-making using a leading-edge suite of data science, policy, and knowledge mobilization material.Ìý

, is University Distinguished Professor of Human Development and Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at Oregon State University. Dr. Settersten is a specialist in life-course studies, with expertise spanning adolescence, adulthood, and aging. He has a strong record of experience conducting research and collaborating across disciplines and life periods. His research has often focused on the first and last few decades of adulthood, always with an eye toward understanding the whole of human life.Ìý

Odum Distinguished Research Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is a prominent figure in the development of life course theory, methods, and research. He studies individuals and groups of people (i.e. birth cohort, etc.) with in-depth interviews and other measurements across different times in their life span with the objective of investigating how changing environments have influenced them.ÌýElder is currently engaged in a longitudinal study of the 1900 generation, with emphasis on the 1920s, the Great Depression and World War II.

Lunch&Learn

This is a special, extra March Lunch&Learn session of the 2021-22 Training Year. The Lunch&Learn series is designed to introduce our Fellows, team members, and partners to emerging research in topics of population dynamics and population aging. These modules will cover the Four CAnD3 Population Aging Axes: (1) family and social inclusion; (2) education, labour and inequality; (3) migration and ethnicity; and (4) wellbeing and autonomy.Ìý
