Embarking on a journey of professional growth and experiential learning, my internship at the Center for Human Rights and Environment (CHRE) has been a remarkable chapter in my academic and personal development. This report recounts my experiences, from my initial motivations to the impactful outcomes, while reflecting on the challenges that enriched my journey. Entering my final year at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, I continue to use my major in international development studies and minor in sociology to further understand global issues and their social dimensions. Climate change, a critical concern, has emerged as a central focus of my studies. As I approach the culmination of my academic journey, I am determined to leverage my interdisciplinary expertise to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change through the lenses of international development and sociology.
Driven by a passion for human rights and environmental advocacy, I was drawn to CHRE's mission of promoting sustainable development and protecting the rights of vulnerable communities. My primary learning objectives were to gain a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between human rights and environmental issues and to enhance my practical skills in research, advocacy, and community engagement. CHRE is a nonprofit organization committed to advancing environmental justice and human rights. It actively engages in research, advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives to address pressing global challenges, such as climate change, pollution, and socio-environmental disparities. I worked remotely from home in Montréal, Quebec for this internship. The organization's mission resonates deeply with my values, as it strives to create a world where environmental sustainability and human dignity coexist harmoniously. As an education intern at CHRE, I was entrusted with diverse responsibilities that allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the organization's initiatives.
Firstly, I conducted in-depth research on the adverse effects of industrial pollution on marginalized communities, compiling data and evidence to help implement accessible information and resources for educational institutions. Several moments during my internship stand out as transformative experiences. One highlight was participating in IGSD’s meetings every week on climate justice, where I had the opportunity to interact with experts, activists, and policymakers. This event expanded my perspective and inspired me to continue advocating for sustainable policies. Furthermore, collaborating with my supervisors regarding these important issues underscored the tangible impact of CHRE's work, reaffirming my commitment to the cause.
During my internship experience, I encountered a variety of challenges that ultimately led to significant personal and professional growth. The dynamic nature of the work environment often required me to adapt quickly to new tasks and responsibilities. While initially daunting, these challenges provided me with the opportunity to enhance my problem-solving skills and build a sense of versatility in my approach to tasks. Collaborating with diverse teams exposed me to different perspectives, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of the field. Overcoming obstacles, such as tight deadlines and technical hurdles, not only bolstered my confidence but also encouraged me to seek guidance and learn from experienced colleagues. These challenges, though demanding at times, have shaped my internship into a transformative journey of learning and development.
My internship at CHRE has had a profound impact on my university experience. The hands-on learning and exposure to complex global challenges have enriched my academic pursuits. Interacting with professionals in the field has broadened my network and provided insights into potential career paths. This internship has transformed my perspective, motivating me to continue exploring the intersection of human rights and environmental advocacy. The funding I received for this internship has been instrumental in enabling me to fully engage in this transformative experience. I did not receive academic credit. I am deeply grateful to the Darlington family for their generous support in funding my internship. Their investment has played a pivotal role in making this valuable experience possible. With their support, I have been able to immerse myself fully in this enriching opportunity, gaining insights, skills, and perspectives that will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors. Their contribution not only empowers me but also demonstrates a profound commitment to fostering learning and development. As I conclude this chapter, I am grateful for the opportunities, knowledge, and skills I have gained at CHRE. The experience has reaffirmed my commitment to driving positive change, advocating for those most affected by environmental injustices, and striving towards a more just and sustainable world.
