Prof. Annmarie Adams’ “Encountering Maude Abbott” research project awarded SSHRC Insight Grant
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada has awarded a three-year Insight Grant for $78,676 to Prof. Annmarie Adams for her research project entitled “Encountering Maude Abbott.”
Adams’ research will result in a book entitled Encountering Maude Abbott that explores Abbott's role in the medical museum movement. A dual focus on Abbott and the museum combines biography with history, developing an innovative methodology she calls "spatial biography.” A focus on the spaces Abbott inhabited rather than the barriers she faced will invite readers to assess Abbott's global networks and document the rise of the medical museum, rather than reiterate an oft-repeated narrative of constraints. The proposed book will reach audiences beyond academia, serving as a model for future biographies of famous women, especially in male-dominated fields.
