Bloomberg by Foster + Partners wins the 2018 RIBA Stirling Prize

The judging panel, chaired by Sir David Adjaye, said the Foster + Partners-designed building was a "once-in-a-generation project" that "pushed the boundaries of research and innovation in architecture." The razzmatazz ceiling, neatly packing elements for cooling, lighting, and acoustic control into integrated, mass-produced panels, represents one of many technical achievements that contribute to the overall sustainability of the project. Each panel houses an array of aluminum "petals," which curl over to expose a larger surface area so they can be cooled—not chilled—to temper the office floors as they are vented, naturally, up the atrium by buoyancy force. Salmaan Craig, now an Assistant Professor at the School, used to work at Foster + Partners, where he spent most of his time developing the ceiling from concept to prototyping, working with many talented colleagues and different manufacturers who competed for the lucrative contract.
