Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival
A film by Fabrizio Terranova, 2016, 90Ìýmin

Cultural Studies screening room, 3475 Peel Street, Room 101
Since its inception in 2012, KABANE77 has been nourishing itself with stories. Stories of the wastelands, the interstices, the liberated spaces that inspire us, and – over the years devoted to opening the abandoned hangar at 77 Bernard East – our own story, told to those who have joined us along the way, to a curious neighbour inquiring about the sounds and images we produce on the spot, and to friends from afar, whose struggles resonate with our own.
These are the stories we will be telling you, under the aegis of Donna Haraway. This mischievous pixie and expert storyteller magnificently conveys the power of speculation in Fabrizio Terranova’s film, which will be presented to close the evening.

Donna Haraway’s groundbreaking work in science, technology, gender and trans-species relationships over the last four decades is marked by her deep commitments to feminism and environmentalism. Refusing to distinguish between humans and animals and machines, she proposed new ways of understanding our world that challenge normative structures and boundaries. Her approach to writing is equally distinct, breaking with prevailing trends in theory by embracing narrative techniques in painting a rebellious and hopeful future. Recognising her singular talent for storytelling, Fabrizio Terranova spent a few weeks filming Haraway and her dog Cayenne in their Southern California home, exploring their personal universe as well as the longer development of Haraway’s views on kinship and planetary welfare. Animated by green screen projections, archival materials and fabulation, Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival is an appropriately eccentric response to a truly originalÌýthinker.Ìý

At the crossroads of the Mile-End’s lines of desire, KABANE77 proposes to open an abandoned city building at 77 Bernard East, and to turn it into a laboratory of experimental social and artistic practices. Anchored in cinematic practices, and inscribed in the organic corridor initiated by the Champ des Possibles, it will be a space of human ecology that houses a hub of knowledge production and sharing that is open to the community.
KABANE77 is in residence at Media@McGill for the 2017-18 academic year.
