Writers in Peril Series at the 14th Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival

Media@McGill is proud to co-sponsor the Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival’s Writers in Peril Series for a fifth consecutive year. The Festival will be taking place from April 18 to April 23 at the Hotel Opus, 10 Sherbrooke West, in Montreal.

The writers participating in this year’s series come from a lively array of backgrounds, countries and experiences. Join us to hear them speak on subjects as far ranging as life as an intellectual in modern Cuba, the Arab Spring in Egypt, and narco-journalism in Columbia. Escritores en peligro: Cuba Event
April 19, 5:30 p.m., Las Américas bookstore, 2075 St Laurent
A round table with poet Wendy Guerra, Franco-Cuban writer Eduardo Manet, and novelist Leonardo Padura, who will discuss the place of the intellectual in today’s Cuba. The round table will be in Spanish and shall be moderated by Jean Fugère.

Ecrivains en péril: Eduardo Manet
April 21, 5:30 p.m., Las Américas bookstore, 2075 St Laurent
An interview with French-Cuban writer, Eduardo Manet, who will be discussing his exile from Cuba to Europe in the fifties, how Cuba has changed since then, and how his experience differs from that of Cuban writers who stayed. The interview will be in French with Jean Fugère.

Writers in Peril: Egypt Today
April 21, 7:00 p.m., Hotel Opus, Godin foyer, 10 Sherbrooke West
An interview with renowned Arab writer Ahdaf Soueif, who will speak about her role in the Arab Spring and how the revolution has challenged writers to rethink old ideas. The interview will be in English with Wael Aboulmagd.

Writers in Peril: Narco-journalism and the Colombian Connection
April 21, 8:30 p.m., Hotel Opus, Godin foyer, 10 Sherbrooke West
Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vásquez will speak of the extensive reach of the drug trade in the lives of ordinary Colombians and Colombian writers. The interview will be in English with Steven Kaal.
